As forecasted by Mike Douglas, Simon Dumont's stomach looks like a pork rind. There are perils to sunbathing at high altitude. It's day 5 and we've brainwashed the Jib Academy finalists to apply sunscreen every hour on the hour. They are now SPF 30 lathered freestyle machines, spreading the gospel of the SPF to young skiers in their faraway homelands.
Everyone has been throwing down during these sunny, sunny early afternoons. Their high energy and performance can be attributed to the high bacon consumption every morning at the Inn. Salomon is a bacon loving team!!! Ohh Snap!
Last night Mammoth hosted a sunset photo shoot for the Salomon Jib Academy. At 6:00 PM, snowcats took all the skiers and staff up to the top of the park to session, film and document the athletes hitting a well groomed 60 foot kicker. Scott Gaffney, from MSP, made a guest appearance to film the action and of course Chris O'Connell from Newschoolers wouldn't miss the event. Everyone had the chance to session the jump a few times, before the light was soft and warm. You know, the type of light that Jay from Freeskier gets all teary-eyed over. As everyone warmed up, the athletes were nailing an impressive array of spins, grabs, and tricks. The caliber of the young guns had the international athletes and all other spectators in awe. Standouts included, Nick Martini, from Waterville, stomping 12 Mutes. Sick. Christoph Lacome, the token Quebecois, threw some steezy switch 7s. Pretty sick, eh??
The Mammoth park crew towed the skiers up behind the snowcats, one of the most hilarious sights of the trip; 10 seventy pound kids jockeying to grab a rope for another chance to hit the kicker. A few snowmobiles helped to expedite the process, helping Sammy Carlson and Mike Clarke get the shot. Clark-ey was going huge last night with a cork nine sausage.
Sammy Carlson loves skiing more then is humanely possible. And if darkness didn't exist, and the world was a 24 day of sun, Sammy would be skiing 24/7. Anyways, the snowcats stopped, the sunset, but Sammy, alongside Cody Ling, was utilizing every last minute of light to session a rail over and over and over until he landed a switch up pretzel 640. Our Midwestern hero, Cody, was hitting the rail with speed, landing some steezy switch up to switch off.
Around 8:30 darkness won over the day, and the sunset photo session was officially over. Everyone reconvened for dinner at the Mammoth Mountain Inn to eat chicken, beg Chris O'Connell to show some video, and play practical jokes, like hiding 25 pairs of skis. Funny, Sammy.
