Portrait With skis Kaj is a real bomb, with a virtually perfect technique as he showed off while winning one of the most prestigious Big Mountain Contest: the Verbier X-Trem 2007. When he is not Freeriding, this all-rounder shows off his artistic talents: he has started up his own hat company, Kask, and designs them himself. If he takes one of them off, you’ll discover his laughing face and inimitable dreadlocks! Through his numerous films, produced by his own production company Swedish Posse, Kaj also puts his efforts into sharing his undiminished passion for skiing!
Interview What are your goals and dreams for next season concerning shooting, filming, travelling any new experience/projects ? My dream is to continue to ski better, I’m improving every year because I push my limits and I’m really feeling ready for the upcoming season. Skiing is just getting more fun for every year I ski.
I will spend a long time in Alaska next year. My goal is to make a super nice film part and shoot nice photos, so I need to spend a long time there to get right conditions with snow and sun. I will go there with my friend Sverre Liliequist maybe we will do a roadtrip from Vancouver to AK.
I will do three competitions, Verbier Xtreme, Big Mountain Pro and Scandinavian championships. My goal will of course be to improve my results and have even more fun doing it.
Tell us a few words about the new Freeski range? What do you like the most in these new skis? Salomon is really getting back on the right track with their new skis. In the 90’s Salomon came with the x-scream ski and it was a revolution in freeride skiing. Salomon was the brand that introduced freeriding products that gave the user a super fun experience on the mountain. I just love the new range of skis, they really give me the opportunity to go out there and have so much fun. With the new skis I can really push and develop my skiing skills and it fulfills my dreams of skiing. X W lab ski I use every day for filming competition or freeriding around the resort. I can do anything on it ski fast or slow jump big or small cliffs, ski switch or not. The rocker ski I take out on a big powder day. It for sure feels like a revolution to ski on this ski. When you are cruising down the mountain it feels like the ski is listening to your thoughts and just fulfills them. Big turns quick turns and big air in a super flow style will be your move if ski on them.
Who is Kaj beside sking: where and how do you live? What are your other passions and hobbies? I live little bit here and there, in the winter I live in Chamonix and in summer/fall I live with my girlfriend in Oslo. But of course I’m almost on the road all the time, in the winter on a ski trip as well in the summer season but in the summer/fall I also travel a lot to work with my beanie brand, Kask. I go to Stockholm and Rättvik in Sweden to design and distribute and everything that you do in a company. Then of course my life is very sporty so I’ll do some kind of sport every day. Like biking crosscountry and I just tried out downhill so I’m pretty hooked on that. Then I practice motocross, tennis, skateboard, surfing, running, and workout at the gym so its little bit of everything.
