FREERIDE WORLD TOUR MAMMOTH MOUNTAIN
29.01.2008

Mammoth Mountain in California is the home town of legendary snowboarder Steve Klassen – 5-time winner of the Verbier Xtreme. Steve is also responsible for the contest here guaranteeing a world class event for riders, public and media on the gruelling McGee Mountain. This is the first time a Freeride contest is held on the McGee, located about 10 km south of the resort Mammoth Mountain.

After a face inspection with binoculars at the bottom of the face, all the riders made their way to the top of the mountain. The 16 women first went down alternating skiers and snowboarders. They were followed by the 37 male riders. The big snowfalls of the previous days packed the landings and allowed the riders to drop big cliffs.

While checking the face through his binoculars, the French skier Seb Michaud said to his friend Aurélien Ducroz: “I have no idea where I want to go now, do you have any suggestion?”, which made Aurélien laugh and answer “me neither, I don’t know which line I want to take !” Apparently the long experience of these 2 famous skiers rewarded them since Seb ended first and Aurélien 3rd, while a Swedish skier, Henrik Windstedt, managed to worm his way to the 2nd place.

In the women skiers category, the US Jesse Mc Millan draw a straight line from the top to the bottom, never hesitating and offering the fastest run of the day in the female group. The judges put her on the 1st step of the podium. She was followed in the ranking by Caroline Meynet from France and Marja Persson (SWE), two very solid skiers despite their completely opposite calibre.

Kaj Zackrisson, live from the Freeride World Tour
I am on my way back from the US to Munich for ISPO a couple of days then I will directly fly to russia for the next stage of the Freeride World Tour.
We did the first event of the new Freeride World Tour in Mammoth and it was two runs on a short easy face, but it felt good for the sport to get the event going, hopefully it will not be on such short runs again.
I was doing great in first run, second run was going good all the way until last cliff where I went to long and high into a landing with deep powder, I actually got stuck in the deep snow and it took like 10 seconds to get out from the bombhole, to bad, I ended up at 8th place. More action to come next week in Russia !

Krasnaya Polyana – the second stop of Freeride World Tour –
The Russian ski resort celebrates the soon arrival of the Nissan Russian Adventure contest with massive snowfalls. The ski resort Krasnaya Polyana (Red Medow) is situated 40 km from Sochi – the capital of the Winter Olympic Games 2014.  It looks promising for this week with a weather forecast of heavy snowfall for 28, 29 and 30 January, and thereafter clear skies and sun on the contest day 31 January!
