JON OLSSON SUPER SESSIONS
07.04.2008
Sammy Carlson won the final prize a the JOSS event: a new, unique style of competition for the freeski community!

The Jon Olsson Super Sessions is complete. Now that it’s all said and done, the event will surely be considered the best and most progressive competition in the history of freeskiing, until someone tops it. In a sport full of one chance slopestyle, big air and pipe contests where perfect tricks need to be thrown every time, this event was both a breath of fresh air and the most original contest skiing has ever seen. With its format and length, the JOSS proudly and successfully did two things that most every other ski event has failed to accomplish…it took the pressure off the athletes and gave them, along with their filmers and photographers, the opportunity to be as creative as possible. The 10-day long event saw eight days of some of the most top notch skiing ever seen complemented by amazing weather and the beautiful backdrop that is Are, Sweden. And when the sessioning stopped each afternoon, the nightlife kicked into high gear and was as intense as the skiing with some of the wildest parties imaginable

Jon Olsson invites 10 of the world’s best skiers to Are, Sweden for a 10 day competition. Each athlete then brings one filmer and one photographer to produce a 5 minute video featuring the talents of all 3 team members.

Four Salomon riders were invited to participate in his first inaugural JOSS event: Simon Dumont, Sammy Carlson, Mike Clark and Swedish local Henrick Harlaut. The guys worked day and night to come up with the best skiing and original concepts to win the contest. In the end, the judges had to decide between Simon and Sammy on which team should bring home $20,000. Simon’s team, Riley Poor and Blake Jorgensen, had an incredible film put together and won the public’s vote but Sammy’s more diversified skiing won over the most points with the judges and took the final prize at the JOSS Awards.

With his team of filmer Dom Janiszewski and photographer Nate Abbott, Sammy decided to simply let his skiing do the talking as opposed to inserting a storyline into his film. In short, it was straight ski porn, and it worked. With some stellar footage of Sammy skiing outside of the features themselves both in the terrain park and on urban rails around town, the gorgeous photos we’ve all come to expect from Nate and wish we could see more of, and the cherry on top, Dom’s paragliding follow cam shots of Sammy on the JOI-jump!

RTP Team with famous filmer and JOSS 2008 winner, Dom Janiszewski, will provide us one of the best Freeski Film ever featuring Salomon best pro riders Simon Dumont, Sammy Carlson, Charles Gagnier, Tomas Krief, Kaj Zackrisson, Cody Townsend and Mark Abma! The objective for the riders and filmers this winter was to produce THE reference in European Freestyle/ Freeride ski films. Charles Gagnier ready to come back!
After his severe fall a few weeks ago while shooting with RTP in Ste Foy, France, Charles Gagnier had confirmation back in Quebec that his crucial ligament was broken. He decided to have an operation to rebuild his knee as soon as possible. Everything went pretty well for the Slopestyle super hero and we were told that he was already walking without crutches a few days after his surgery! Charles is now working hard with his rehab, supported by a great team of physio and plans to come back on snow this summer: good luck and great rehab Charles!
